Living our dream,

 traveling the world!

Kuching, Malaysia #16

     August 24,

We both slept decently upon awakening. We looked out to the courtyard. It is a better view at night with the fairy lights, but we could see more of the complex we are in… it is huge! Anyway, we got about having our Javas. But we had to go out to get food, as we did not have anything. We loaded up in our Proton car and went searching. We are near Chinatown, and the place Jeff had found was there… but was not open, so we parked. We found a busy place, Old Street Town Kopitiam. Kopitiam means ‘coffee house serving traditional Malay and Chinese fare’.

We sat and were given three or four oversized picture menus. There were English explanations, but the pictures were so big. Anyway, we wrote down what we wanted and then took the order up. I had toast with a perfectly done fried egg and a mushroom, onion heaping mix. YUMMY! Jeff had a croissant with pulled pork.😋  We both had iced tea. When Jeff took a drink, his tooth started hurting… it has been an issue for the past few days. He looked up and made an appointment with a Dentist for tomorrow. It is the same crown that has troubled him two prior times since March! Anyway, our meals cost us 34.60 RM or $8.22. We finished and went to a local grocery store then back to our car. We arrived at our place, and passed the time until lunch.

Around 1400, we went back out, walking this time and going to Little Fairy Cafe for lunch. We each ordered a set menu: one Ginger Chicken with rice and one Black Pepper Pork with rice. It was underwhelming – both dishes were the same, except one cracked pepper in it. Pretty sure both dishes were pork though. We each had a lemon iced tea, and paid 32 RM or $7.61. We went back to the grocery store and picked up other items that we decided we needed. Then we were walking back to our place when it started raining on us… really? Jeff e-hailed a Grab to take us less than ½ mile back to our place!

We had a snack supper of PB/Nutella on butterscotch bread and popcorn. We did a load of laundry, as we have a washing machine in our place. Then we talked with my mom on WhatsApp, but could not stay up to talk with our local church and called it a day.

     August 25,

We were up and at ‘em by 0715… readied, had our Javas and breakfast of more PB/Nutella on that yummy butterscotch bread. We were out the door by 0830 to get to Jeff’s 0900 dental appointment. We arrived at 0850 and they let us in but were bustling around to get open… it was a flurry of purple, as they are all in purple uniforms. Anyway, Jeff got checked in and went back at 0910. I stepped out at 0925 to try a WhatsApp with my sister, but that failed. I texted her that I would try later, and went back up to the office and Jeff was paying. It cost 50 RM or $11.80! He had an x-ray and was back there for 30 minutes. Crazy prices! Anyway, Jeff said the x-ray showed the root of his crown tooth was cloudy. The dentist said he would need a root canal and a new crown! He also said they fit him in for tomorrow at 0900. OKAY! It could be a couple of hours. Anyway we left and went back to our place.

We were able to talk with my sister. We went out in our car to a 7-Eleven, but they aren’t nearly as stocked as many 7-Elevens here in SE Asia. So we went to another convenience store, found what we needed – including ice. Our condos’ refrigerator barely cools and does not freeze at all. Then back to our place and we were able to talk with Jeff’s sister and her husband.

Now we decided to go to a mall – for lunch, for steps and for a movie! At the food court of the mall we had a Claypot of Smoked Duck and Rice; and a Sarawak Laksa Klasik, which is a broth seasoned with laksa paste and coconut milk served with vermicelli noodles, shredded omelet and chicken, topped with small shrimp and cilantro. Both dishes were very flavorful, redeeming Malaysian food somewhat for us. We shared a lemon iced tea. The total bill for all of it was 30 RM or $7.13. Finished, we got a cheese tart – that was underwhelming. Then we walked some- getting steps in. We stopped in the larger grocery store here in the mall, taking the stuff we bought back to our car. By then the movie was to start. So we went to the theatre and saw the latest Jurassic Park. It was better than I expected.

Movie over, we went back to the grocery store for refrigerator items we wanted and left the mall for our place. Once home we had a salad, crackers and cheese for supper. Then I blogged/Jeff read and did dishes. Simple living, just somewhere else!
