Living our dream,

 traveling the world!

Antarctica #3

     February 15,

Up and about by 0700 after a decent night’s sleep. We started with our Javas in our cabin, then decided on a treadmill walk/work out. It was busy so we opted to eat a light breakfast at Paula’s Pantry. We had a small muesli and shared a ham/cheese popover-type stuffed bread. Then the treadmills opened so we did a 20 minute session.

At 1000, we went to a penguin lecture in the Auditorium. When she finished we both started feeling a bit of nausea. HUMMM. So we went back to our cabin, took some dramamine and settled in our cabin. Thankfully the pill worked. The wind has changed to coming at us instead of pushing us from behind. We opted to stay in our cabin, and started watching the next lecture, but gave up on it and just relaxed.

For lunch we had Paula’s Pantry as well. I had a small piece of Spinach Feta Quiche and Jeff had a small Pastrami, Cheese, and Coleslaw dressing Sandwich. When we finished we went back to our cabin. We settled in for a relaxing afternoon. I had signed up for a painting class but cancelled it, relaxing some instead.

We watched a lecture on the TV from our cabin. It was Chad, talking on “Finding the Unreachable,” finding Shackleton’s Endurance Boat in 2022. It was great and informative. Then we had a siesta. At 1800 we watched the Expedition recap on the telly. One of the crew showed the (Beaufort) scale. It measures weather and swells of the water. He said we are about a #6, out of 0-12. At 1830 we went out to a Captain’s Welcome Reception. Our Captain, Mindaugas Oginskas (Lithuanian), introduced himself and his officers, some of the staff and crew. He mentioned many other stats…highlights: our yacht is a 1B ice class vessel, there are 134 crew, 170 guests from 29 different nationalities. Some breakdown 72 USA, 60 Chinese (tomorrow is Chinese New Year), at least 8 UK and maybe 8 Indians.  We all where given champagne and he gave a toast to which we all saluted. Then the Captain came to every group and at least said hi.

Supper was our first full meal today, and was great as all the meals have been. We shared two appetizers- Spring Poussin Ballotine (Cepes mushroom, parsley oil with herb vinaigrette) and Cream of Porcini Mushroom Soup; and then two mains- Steamed Turbot Fish with ginger soy sauce over rice & Chinese cabbage, and Beef Filet Mignon with truffle mash potato, Morel mushrooms & Marsala wine sauce. Then we had two desserts: Valhona Chocolate Quenelle- like a chocolate mousse with olive oil drizzle, sea salt, & hazelnut crumble on layer of dark Chocolate sauce; and a cheese selection with pecans and dried fruit (not sure which cheese it was, but was only one kind not the four that were listed).

After we ate we went back to our cabin. I blogged some. Jeff turned in just before around 2015, and me an hour later.
