Phu Quoc, Vietnam #3
August 9,
Up and about, we started the day with coffee and hot chocolate out on our balcony watching the ocean. There were some small boats out a distance. Fishing, maybe? Nice way to start the day. Went back inside and had breakfast of crackers and peanut butter and a yogurt.
Around 1100, we got on our scooter to go about. Our scooter is a red & black Yamaha Nouvo 6, 125cc. It is undoubtedly used and broke in, but it works fine. As Jeff was putting on his helmet, one of two rivet fasteners from the right side chin strap gave way (from rust). So it is still connected and works – keeping the helmet on Jeff's head, but sketchy.
Underway, the scooter rides fine. Jeff said it tops out at 80kmph, which is 50mph. We pass out of the town area and see some of the jungle, hilly terrain that makes up much of Phu Quoc Island. Also we pass the airport that we landed at. We are heading to Kien Giang area. It is almost halfway up the island on the Western side and took us around 30 minutes. Our main mission was to check a possible church we may go to – it's another Evangelical Church.
We first detoured to the scooter rental place. It is on the way, mostly. But when we arrived it was not open. Jeff did a WhatsApp with the guy. He had the day off, but did ask if it would be okay to do a helmet exchange tomorrow. That would be okay since it is working. We next stop at KingKong Mart. It is a “the biggest super market in Phu Quoc,” as per their website. It is big, has quite a bit of selection of everyday needs and food stuffs, but also has a lot of souvenir stuff. We were getting stuff we needed and decided to put it back – will come back to shop after couple of other errands – namely lunch.
Right across the street from the mart is a Mexican restaurant! So we went there – Taco Leo for food. We ordered two fish tacos, and a carne asada burrito with a peach tea and mango-ade. The fish tacos were good. The burrito had good beef slices and taste, but not mexican spiced. But it was a fun place. Now fueled up, we went back and did our shopping. Then found the The Evangelical Church Of Viet Nam. We'll check it out Sunday – English service is at 0800. That means we will have to leave An Thoi before 0730!
Now we head back to our place. Laid back afternoon. Attempted to go to the pool, but they were cleaning it. The pool guy pointed to the other building, so we could use it… interesting, but we just went back to our condo/apartment and changed. We opted to just walk about exploring more of our Disneyesque village. Checking out the cable lift and the Kiss of the Sea show, then back again to our place.
Sunset was pretty nice, quite a bit of color, but again a cloud bank stopped the sun “kissing the water,” so to speak. We had a French type supper: cheese, pepperoni, cucumber, and orange peppers with a baguette and a roasted sesame dipping sauce. Also had another Da Lat wine – it was better than the white one previously. But we want to try the another Da Lat wines – one with 'Superior' and one with 'Export'.
We did not watch the nightly show, called “Kiss of the Sea.” But we did watch the fireworks display at the end, of course. We were rewarded – they had some different fireworks. I hope I won't get tired of the spectacle of fireworks!
