Moroccan Living 9
June 27th
Today we awoke and decided to adventure into making… Moroccan pancakes – Baghrir. So glad we did!! It was fun and they were sooo good! They are more like crepes and once put in skillet you do not flip them. We halved the recipe and still had ten 6-8 inch rounds! We also did the recommended topping of butter and honey, but with our leftovers we will venture out. With full, happy bellies we went out.
First, went to laundry place. The guy remembered us and said he has family in Texas. Then he said tomorrow noon, as before but added will be closed after tomorrow. The Muslim holiday, Eid Al-Adha starts tomorrow, and may last couple of days. (We knew about this previously but had forgotten it was this close.) This may explain the increase of traffic right around our apartment complex. We figured it may have due to summer – Moroccan people tend to go to coastal cities to escape the heat of the interior/desert of the country. Anyway, the street stalls have dramatically increased, which chokes up the street for vehicles! There is a whole bunch of beep-beeps, horn blasts, and siren noise hitting our windows!!! But the hardest part is trying to walk around.
After we left our laundry, we attempted to go to beach. But it is high tide and windier, so just opted to go to store. Bought more essentials, and caught taxi back to our crowded street! We relaxed then had a light lunch – mimicked our salad yesterday – sliced tomatoes, and red onion with grated carrot and olive oil and salt. Also had some cheese and almonds. So good!
Then we did some tweaking to our website… added a blog archive page. Now, we (and you) can revisit the places we have been. Also, Jeff figured out how to add the picture of the day on the blog, instead of clicking on the camera you click on the picture. This looks way better. Please comment what you think.
We went out for dinner. Our Realtor/Apartment Owner has a restaurant, also! This is where we went – Restaurant Ferdaouss. We were first to arrive (hopefully not the only ones tonight). When we walked in, the staff were eating. The place didn't appear to be a restaurant! But we were invited in and directed upstairs! Wow, opened up to a nice dining area. The waiter came with menus, and offered wine when we ordered!! Bonus points! Jeff had a lamb tagine – it was a thick cut of shoulder. It was so tender almost a roast cut actually, and served with a lamb au jus/demi-glaze. It was excellent! I had a chicken saffron tagine, that had a sauce of saffron and lemon pulp. Mine was also very good! We had sides of cous cous and veggies (carrots, type of squash, and potatoes, with couple of cherry tomatoes for garnish) that we shared. We had a Moroccan red wine we've had already, it complimented both dishes. I WhatsApp -ed our Realtor guy and he showed up before we even had our food. Because we made the link he gave us dessert, Mhancha, (a Moroccan almond pasty coiled up – aka, Moroccan snake pasty,) and mint tea.
After dinner, we walked about the Medina some and went to the Rempart Mogador, the city walls where cannon replicas show how it was the cities defense at one time. It is a great view place of the ocean, and always busy at sunset. It's been a good day, albeit, windy. But I'm a Kansas girl!
