Moroccan Living 5
June 21st
Awoke and around after breakfast. We went to the beach. Some of the north beach we had not yet explored. It was coming upon low tide, so we were able to walk around the wall of the medina and to the fishing harbor. (We passed by our apartment complex, could just make out our windows.) For any history buffs out there, I found this informative sign:
“Around the year 1765, Sultan Sidi Med Ben Abdellah decided to build a shelter on the rocky outcrop of Cap Mogador to serve as a naval base. In 1915, it was decided to develop a barge port there with an area of four hectares, including…two piers… . The various developments undertaken between 1924 and 1967 related to the deepening of the harbor pass, the consolidation of the quays and the extension of the main jetty. Today, Essaouira is essentially a fishing port located 360 km south of Casablanca and 173 km northeast of Agadir.”
Anyway, we saw some small fishing boats coming in, a big fishing boat being unloaded with man power, and of course, all kinds of fish being sold and bought. The whole area was a hubbub of activity. It was fascinating to watch!
We meandered back to main boardwalk, then crossing back through the medina to our place. We cooled off and went back out for lunch – Asian Red Food. We were up for Thai soup! We had Tom Kha Kai – Thai soup, and fried noodles with chicken. Jeff ordered the soup medium but will get it spicy next time. We enjoyed! Then we went “shopping” – found a flyswatter (we haven't seen windows that have screens here, so we get flies!) and some stuff for dinner. It's been a good day!!
