Langkawi, Malaysia #2

March 4,
We awoke and Jeff has a cold – don’t know from where. He is congested a bit and sneezing a lot. So we just chilled out much of the day. We did go out for breakfast. I got Smash Egg plate, which was two very runny eggs on piece of toast, beans, hash browns, and chicken (hotdog) sausages. I ate it but did not enjoy it, and Jeff would not eat the eggs. Jeff got the Nasi Lemak, which was rice, boiled peanuts, a piece of fried chicken, anchovies, and a dangerously spicy sauce. It is a common Malay dish and was the best dish.
Returned to our place and we both had a siesta. Then we were able to video WhatsApp with Jeff’s sister and her husband, some. Our internet connection cut us short. We had a light lunch of PB/chocolate on crackers. I blogged some and Jeff had another siesta.
I went out and acquired supper and tomorrow’s breakfast stuffs. I am doing pretty well with my foot walking, as long as I go slowly. I am able to almost do full weight bearing now. Anyway, I stopped at the bread store, getting a savory and a cinnamon roll. Next was a fruit stand and bought a packaged/cut up sun melon. Then at Samara Langkawi Cafe. I ordered a falafel plate, and Arabic salad to go. Lastly, I got Jeff a beer and me a hard apple cider. I took the goods back and we ate a good supper.
Then Jeff felt up to going across the street for sunset. Another nice one, and we saw a bit of a fire show. The para-sailors and jet skiers were all still having fun.
March 5,
We were up and about. I have been having their instant 3-in-1 coffee (coffee with creamer and sugar). Jeff actually had one of these “coffees” this morning.🤯😁 Anyway, the place has a water dispenser in the hallway, which has a cool water spigot and a hot one. We don’t have a kettle in our room, but this is okay because we don’t have to buy 5 L waters! Then we had breakfast of the cinnamon roll and small savory roll; and last of the sun melon.
Jeff is feeling much better and we decided to get out and about. So he went down and rented scooter from our place. It is a Yamaha Ego, cost 30 Rm, which is $6.77. We found helmets that worked and hit the road. We had to get gas, as we only had a little bit in the tank – this is the normal we have found in all of SE Asia. Anyway, we found a station. You pump your own gas here. Now that is different! We got 2.6 L for 5.33Rm. This correlates to $1.74/gallon… one of the cheapest gas places we have been to! We looked it up and Malaysia is the tenth cheapest gas pricing in the world!!
Now we drove north along the west side. We went around the airport. The roads are nice and lots of winding curves. But the scooter is wimpy when we come to inclines! We made them though. Thankfully they were not 15% up climbs!! They drive on the left side here, but Jeff has been driving so much on the wrong side… It may be a challenge to drive on the right side again. We did see monkeys🐒 on the side of the road. Finally we arrived at our destination, the Langkawi Cable Car or Sky Cab. We bought a combo ticket for the Sky Cab Ride and to walk on the Sky Bridge. It was 89Rm/person, which is $20.09/person.
We made our way through the “Disneyesque” like street of souvenir shops and food stands, passing by info placards of the complex here. There were many stats touted about the cable car and the sky bridge (the most, the largest.. etc.) from when it was built in 2004. But so much has changed in twenty years. We finally arrived at the base station, which is at 44.29 feet of elevation, and we board the cable car ride. The car holds six and we were #5 & #6. Now we go up, up and away! A 12 minute ride to the middle station, which is at 2,133 feet elevation. We got off and WOW! The views were spectacular. We went to the Eagle’s Nest, but found out our combo ticket did not include this. I think that is was okay because it was see-through walkout area suspended in the air. I’m pretty sure I could not have done it!! We did a selfie looking up to the Sky Bridge where we were going. I should be able to walk out on it.
We re-boarded the cable car for the last leg to the top station, which is at an elevation of 2,323 feet. Once up here you can see more of the island, on the other side of the mountain. We went onto the Sky Bridge. Oh my!😲 It is a suspension bridge and it moves in the wind. As long as I walked, I could not detect the movement. So I did not really stop after that first time. It was amazing views of this island and the surrounding islands sitting in the ocean. Beautiful!
It was here that some entrepreneur monkeys🐒🐵 were watching us, and a mama with her baby snagged someone’s chips!
We now boarded the cable car again, but to to go down. It was fun and took fifteen minutes. I found my foot is doing very well – no real pain, just tenderness. But I am still going slower than normal and favoring it a bit. The way down we had the car to ourselves and just took it all in for the last time. Once down we meandered back through the shops to our scooter. We loaded up and set out.
Now we tootled to a waterfall, but it is dry season and the fall is a mere trickle. So we left and hit the road again. We drove to a “black” sand beach… underwhelming. It was just speckled with streaks and patches of black sand. So striking out we decided to head on back to our place. We did not even find a fruit stand for a shake. It could be due to this being Ramadan month. Anyway, we arrived back to our place around 1500, and cooled off in our AC room!. Our total drive was just shy of 86 km, or 53 miles.
Around 1600, we went back out on the scooter for lunner. We went to Smokeys BBQ, Texan BBQ & Smoke House. We had the Chef’s special – Smoked Pulled Brisket, Smoked Pulled Lamb, Mac & Cheese, Coleslaw, Baked Beans, and Corn on the cob pieces; and the Smoked Brisket Cheesy Burger with French Fries. I had a Somersby hard apple cider and Jeff had two Chang beers. Excellent meal! We were able to talk with the owner, who had lived in Texas only a few months, but loves American BBQ. It showed!! The meal cost 153 Rm, which is $34.29. We had a flier from our hotel which gave us each one free drink, which was nice. This was actually how we found out about the restaurant.
Finished, we returned to our place, turned in the scooter, and relaxed. We did go back out crossing the street for sunset. We saw a couple whose YouTube we follow some. That was cool. I called out their name and they waved, with a couple of lines exchanged, but they kept going. It was still cool. And the sunset did not fail! Gorgeous for a great day!
