Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia #9

August 16,
We were both up and about by 0700, though Jeff had been awake since 0330. We both remembered hearing the call to prayer, but I went back to sleep. Anyway, we set about having our Javas out on our balcony. This has been a great way to start and end a day! Then we had our breakfast of oatmeal, yogurt and bananas. We both added some coconut ‘jammy’ goodness to our oatmeal! 😋 Lovely!
Today was just gonna be a day living, just someplace else – we had nothing planned. We watched some YouTube videos. We did book a couple of upcoming stays that we still had not done. Morning gave way to lunch time. We did have errands to run, so we went out around 1130. The first place was a chocolatier, but it was not open. So… next stop, a Hypermarket. We found just about everything we listed. This is not usually the case. Next stop in our loop was a coffee shop, Decrypt Coffee Roaster. They only had two kinds of Malaysian coffee beans. I tried the one with a flavor profile of Guava, Passionfruit, and Mulberry. It was okay but not what I want every morning. It was more expensive, too! So I nixed it. The last stop was for lunch. Jeff had found Howdy Grillhouse JQ, an American style BBQ restaurant – meaning smoked meat, and placed an order online around 1045. During our errand running they had called to confirm our order. When we arrived, there was no parking so Jeff let me out. I went up to the entry and it was locked. I know because I tried to open the door. Then I saw the sign, something about an event and it was closed until 1700. What!?!😲 As I was processing this a delivery guy showed up and tried the doors- really hard as well even knocking. Still nothing, Jeff pulled up then. I explained to him they were closed until 1700. About this time a man opened the door and mentioned my order and said 5 minutes. Whew and Yeah!! He also dealt with the delivery guy- giving him his order. Then I got ours and I paid 112 RM or $26.58.
Order in hand, we drove back with the smell wafting in the car. People were driving too slowly for Jeff, and me as well. The roundabouts seemed to be barricades! But we finally arrived, having to park in the street yet again. We rushed up and ate our fantastic orders: one of a Smoky Racks- slow cooked pork ribs, flame grilled to perfection, glazed with sauce served with chips (fries); and one of Braised Lamb Shank- slow cooked to perfection, offering succulent, melt-in-your-mouth meat infused with aromatic herbs and savory richness, served with mashed potatoes, and veggies. So, so, so good… getting hungry again as I write this. The descriptions were their own and spot on. So tender we did not need knives or forks for that matter! We also had a side of St. Louis BBQ sauce. We had an Australian Cab Sav wine with it. The meal gets a Super excellent rating, especially the lamb, which was still closer to a sheep age… just saying.
The rest of the day was chillaxing, listening to music. I blogged, and Jeff read. We did go out for a SIM card for me since the WIFI at our place is so bad. Then we had a snack supper of blue cheese and bread; did a little balcony sitting – till not much of a sunset; then we watched a movie. A foodie kind of day!!!
August 17,
When we got up and about, we both realized we had not heard the call to prayer this morning! Jeff said he awoke at 0530, though. I awoke around 0645. Anyway, we had our Javas on the balcony. I finally noticed a plane that was not Air Asia. It had a yellow tail. We went in and had our breakfast of Muesli and yogurt with a banana each. We watched a bit of YouTube – again had no major plans for the day.
Around 1130, we went out. Our first stop was a pharmacy. I needed some allergy medicine. I went ahead and checked for my other prescriptions. This place gave me no grief, but I still had to show my passport. The place had all the medications and I will definitely be good until the end of the year! Now the only time we should need a pharmacy is for OTC meds. Yay!!
Our next stop was lunch, as there was a food court right across the street from the pharmacy. We ordered from Ipoh Kim Poh- Traditional Charcoal Grill. We had a Claypot Chicken Rice- chicken, Chinese sausage, ginger, herbs, and charred long grain rice; and a Claypot Pork Original- a dark brothy soup with pork belly, an egg, chicken sausage or tofu, herbs. The two entrees cost us 30 RM ($7.12). We ordered drinks from another stall, called Yamcha Place Lido. I had a Watermelon Juice and Jeff had a Lime Juice. These were 12 RM ($2.85). Yummy meal! We will definitely have more claypot meals!!
Next stop, a different Hypermart… found most of what we needed. Then we went to a different coffee shop, called October Coffee Roasters. I tried their house October blend… loved it! It is from various production regions… not sure if that meant spread in Malaysia or worldwide. But I did not care after the other coffee. I bought a 200ml bag that they ground for me. We also shared a coconut tart here. Now we headed back to our place and chillaxed: I blogged, Jeff read.
We had a light supper of bread, blue cheese, PB, Coconut Jam and Banana bread. Then we talked with my mother and her husband; watched a movie; talked with our church family back home; and bed. Another Foodie Day!!
