Hoi An, Vietnam #32
November 15,
We awoke and had our Javas in our room. I am close to the the last of my good coffee from Hue! 🙁 We went down to breakfast: I had a Hoi An Bread (chicken sandwich), and Jeff, the Banana Pancake. We each had a Watermelon juice, and were served passion fruit and bananas on our fruit plate. I am finding out I'm not a day in-day out passion fruit kind of girl. Anyway, we went back to our room and readied for an outing on the other side of Da Nang.
We set off on the scooter to go to a famous pass here, but it was a very hazy day. So, best laid plans… we changed and went to the Lady Buddha Site instead. We followed the “snakey” road, up the hill, seeing peeks of the white buddha statue contrasting with all the greenery of Vietnamese forestation. Arriving and finding the scooter parking, we went into the site – the whole site was free, even parking! We walked to the feet of the looming Lady Buddha, according to the web the “statue is a symbol of peace, joy & prosperity” and “is believed to help all living beings with her compassion and mercy.” I don't know about all this, but she does soar 67m (220ft) above us, and that provided some nicely wanted shade. After we did our neck stretching looks, we did our photo op, and then just walked around the site. There was a nice little water pond area, garden-like park areas and several smaller temples to take in. The Statue was built from 2004 to 2010 along with the whole site here, that involves the Linh Ung Pagoda. It is also very tall and looming, but I could not find how tall it was. There was not any signage here about that, and I fell in a rabbit hole trying to find it online. Anyway, out front of this pagoda was a Reclining Buddha statue and a massive gate. You can not climb up inside the Lady Buddha statue or the Pagoda. That was a bit disappointing, because the views out over the shoreline of the ocean and Da Nang would be spectacular. Anyway, we wound up our tour of the site and loaded back up on the scooter going back down to the city of Da Nang and on to Hoi An.
We did stop at the Go mall for the Go hypermart. We found the last items on our lists. We also went to Lotteria (KFC clone) for local fried chicken. We shared a X3 chicken piece, fries, and a 7UP with water we still had. Once we finished, we loaded back up on the scooter. We drove back along shore, and went the dock area to check on ferry crossing times. We did not see the official dock area, but found a couple of guards who stopped us. They were wondering what we wanted, but did not speak English. One of them pulled out there phone and we talked with a lady who relayed the info Jeff was asking.
Back to our place, we unloaded and had a siesta. My back was warning me to lay low for a bit. Jeff did put the TENS unit on me. I forgot to mention, Jeff found replacement pads for our unit on line and we ordered and received the pads. YAY! What a blessing. Around supper time, we were all set to order in, but our host told of of a places to go. Huh, okay? So we went out. We found Circle Restaurant. The lady (owner?) had lived in the US in Minnesota and Colorado. It has a local and American menu. We went with local. We had White Rose Dumplings – only made in Hoi An; Lemongrass Chicken with rice and side salad with avocado. When we finished those we were still a little hungry so we had the Spicy Corn starter, which was like a warm corn relish dish. The food was great and we will be back.
We walked back to our place and relaxed – bed by 2200
