Essaouira, Day 3
June 7th,
Today we had our first local, as in from Agadir, grapefruit as part of our breakfast. It was yummy!!! Lazy morning after that. Finally, we went out around noon, and headed to the northern Essaouira beach. It was windy causing the waves to be surf worthy. It was a very different ocean than yesterday. Also there weren't any tourists while we walked on the beach. It doesn't have a boardwalk, you actually have to hike over sand dunes to get there. As we were leaving, the wind picked up more, or turned and caused us to be pelted with the sand. Crazy, and not so enjoyable. As we went back over the dunes, we did see some tourists coming. Wishing them better time!
From here we went to a local hypermart. Some prices better, but in general, they were very comparable to the Carrefour. This store does have a second floor (with a flat escalator that a grocery cart can go up), hence the hypermart status. You could buy clothes, furniture, dishes, etc. Anyway, this allows us keep our options open, especially now that we've decided to stay here for couple of months! 🙂 So we left the store without buying anything.
Time for lunch! We shared a ride in a local horse “taxi”. When we got in there were two other ladies, but two more joined us before started. So it was quite packed. We decided a regular taxi is better, because they cost the same, and not packed in like sardines! But it was an experience, and the driver did get the horse up to a good clip.
Anyway, we arrived in the medina, or souk area, and found the restaurant we wanted. It was Asian Red Food. They have Thai food! We were hot so we did not go for a soup (Tom Kha Kai is a soup that we use to test out Thai food). I had fried rice with vegetables; Jeff had beef red curry. Both were very good. We will definitely be back here!!!
Back to our place, showered, and probably will settle in for the night – plan for a light supper and always hopeful for sunset, but has been very cloudy today. (There wasn't a good one last night.)
Before I go I want to do a shout out to our nephew, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!”
