Living our dream,

 traveling the world!

Essaouira

     June 5th

Awoke and repacked. Today is a transition day. Ate breakfast of yogurt and muesli. Slowly got around, we catch the bus at 1:30 pm, but we don't have to leave until 1200. We actually vacated @ 1202, then we walked basically two blocks to the bus station. This apartment was convenient for this. I will miss hearing the kids in their little “recess” alcove. We both have enjoyed our time here in Agadir. But we are moving on – to Essaouira. (We still don't get the way it is said, because we've heard around five different pronunciations.

Anyway, we boarded the bus, but we left around 12 minutes late just before 13:45 due to a couple of late people. We are in seats one and two. I gotta say – not a fan! I see how close we are to oncoming traffic and how much the driver drives in the oncoming lane! Ride is only three and 1/2 hrs long, but driver did make a 15 minute stop, around 3:30-ish. The terrain is very dry. According to mapping program, we should have crossed over a few rivers but the beds were bone dry. As we were arriving into Essaouira, we finally saw a trickle of a “river” (really a stream).  We were only five minutes late getting to the bus station. So grabbed our luggage and trekked to our new accommodation. It was only 10 minute walk. This town is around 70,000 people, so way smaller than Agadir's 1 million! We arrived and while trying to figure how to call our host, he came out the door adjacent to ours. He said he thought he heard us. He showed us in and around the place. It is quite lovely! You come in the entry of a hallway and rooms branch off. But the rooms have arched doorways and arched windows. Then opens to a courtyard – like room of dining and commons area with three story opening that allows natural sunlight in. After he showed the place, he offered to show Jeff a snack and restaurant area. I stayed back and took pics and started unloading some stuff. But they came back real soon, then he offered us a meal sometime and tea now. His wife came down and bought homemade cookies with the tea. This is why called him and his wife a host/hostess. This is way above. I said we would be honored. They will be making us lunch tomorrow!!

Anyway, we wanted to go out to eat. Again he wanted to take us out and show us around. WOW! So nice. We walked and talked. Saw the layout of the town; the old part of town (he called it a “medina”); and the beach. We stopped at a restaurant he recommended. They had just opened, and we were starving (we did not eat lunch), so we parted ways. We went in and ordered the menu. Both started with a Moroccan salad's plate with samplers of potato, beet, eggplant, green peppers, tomatoes salads. Main – I had chicken tagine with lemons and olives; Jeff had grilled fillet of dorado fish with steamed veggies of mini cukes, carrots, summer squash, onion, and something else – maybe turnip??. Anyway, both were excellent!! Then we had dessert: a honeydew melon plate and sliced, peeled oranges with sprinkling of cinnamon. WOWZA!!! The honeydew – best we've ever had, hands down. And orange so sweet, like candy, but cinnamon took it over the top. Bonus, was both desserts were light!! We want to eat here again!

Back to our place– first impression – we love it!!!!!
