Cape Town #4
November 6th
First off shout out to Jeff's sister — Happy Birthday!!! Yesterday was 29th… Again, right!
Yesterday when we awoke, we readied and breakfast, but our morning plans fell through. So we were in Cape Town without any plans; drove around; and decided to go to Wine Country – Stellenbosch area. It was a pleasant drive from the city to farm land and vineyards all the while skirting mountains and through a couple of mountain passes. We just had a nice drive morning to noonish. In Stellenbosch town itself we did stop at the tourist information place. The lady was very welcoming and we got some good info. We left and decided to go ahead and head back to our apartment (back in the Strand) by way of a grocery store. We will save tasting a small percent of the two hundred wineries in this area for another time.
Lunch was some soft tacos!! We haven't had any American tacos since we left in April – so was very much appreciated, and we even found Old El Paso Taco Seasoning and salsa! Anyway, Supper was light: I had salad, Jeff had PB & J.
We connected with our church family and service via ZOOM; then we connected with family via WhatsApp. It was a comforting day!
Today we awoke and finally went to the beach!!! It was the first time since we've been here. (Unreal, I can't believe it has taken us this long.) It was a crisp morning low 60's, but there were people out getting in their “steps”/exercising as well. We did see a few shells on the beach, including little purplish starfish! The water is pretty cold at first, but you semi get used to it – how do people swim in this??? We walked down to where the river intersects the beach. (We did not cross because don't know how deep it is, and we don't have on bathing suits; but the beach continues on a long ways.) Then we went the other way as far as we could go. Here we saw a dead baby shark on the beach. Went back to our place.
It was a good, morning jaunt. We ate breakfast and then we walked to a different store. (They have so many, we are still trying to find the one we will frequent. This one won't be the one.) We walked back to our place. Lunch was a Greek Salad. Jeff took a siesta and then did some planning. I watched the construction on the street. There's a asphalt grinder; followed by a bobcat and a street sweeper; then a guy spraying some liquid; then an asphalt layer that is fed by dump truck after dump truck of asphalt. I find it fascinating – I guess I did not see even of this stuff growing up where I did. Anyway…
Supper was leftover rotisserie chicken in a yogurt lemon/garlic sauce with red pepper and red onion over bowtie pasta. We had a nice South African Cab. Sav.
It has been a couple of good days.
