Bangkok- Foodie Fun #2

     July 11,

Well, after being in bed for 13hrs!! …. Don't judge we were exhausted, and awoke ready to go. We had a light breakfast of coconut yogurt with chunks of coconut flesh😋and cranberry cookies (I did not care for them that well). Now we set out. First off we head to the closest BTS station – which is the like an elevated metro system in Bangkok. They call it the BTS SkyTrain, or just BTS. There is also a subway system, the MRT, which is mostly underground. Anyway, they have a package deal for one month/35 trips and it is only on a certain area and the lines closest to us. We each got one. So we set off on our first ride. We went to a bank that Jeff had researched. It showed online that we could open a bank account on a tourist visa. We took a queue number and waited 1hr and 15 minutes for our number to be called! We went to our designated window and in five minutes, we were denied as the online stuff was just flat out wrong! So… that was a bust and a waste of time.

We went to lunch. There was a Mexican restaurant… I know it's not Thai food, but we have not had Mexican food in a long time. This chain has been here in Bangkok for 10 years, and uses freshest ingredients – 100% corn dough (masa) tacos fresh-made everyday. Their beef is from Australia, cheese from UK, Holland, and New Zealand. And Sunrise Tacos is the number one Mexican restaurant in Bangkok as the importer of avocados from Australia. Impressive credentials! We went in and ordered. We spilt the 'Carne Asada Fries- Fries layered with grilled steak, creamy avocado salsa, sour cream, Pico de Gallo, and cheese'; and 'Quesa Birria Tacos with Small Consomé- three crispy, handcrafted corn tacos generously filled with melted cheese and gourmet birria beef… (with) Consomé, perfect for dipping those crunchy tacos.'  Wow it was so good. the steak on the fries was tender and the beef in the tacos was like roast beef, with the taco shells crunchy and fresh. I had a Coke and Jeff had water with lime wedge. Then we split a piece of Mango Tango Pie. Super fine meal and satisfied our Mexican food craving! It was a bit more pricey – “Western prices” – $27!

Next, we found a phone shop and got me a SIM card for 30 days with 30GB for 200 Baht ($5.50). That went smoothly, unlike the bank! While in the store we went ahead and downloaded our apps for our BTS cards. They are rechargeable and called Rabbit cards. Jeff also got us on the Rabbit Rewards, another app that will get us free stuff.

Next we went to three different malls. Just checking things out. The first mall was seven stories tall, once inside we realized we were in the wrong mall. So after we “Ohhed” and “Ahhed” we left. Next mall, we found the KEEN store. We bought some actual KEEN shoes, that we love. My knock off “KEEN” shoes, Jeff has glued together once – as well as his knock off pair. But mine are separating again in other areas! We also came to a supermarket – showcasing French items this month? Questions??  Anyway, we bought some snack stuff for our place (hummus, a baguette, some good cheeses, and some good looking salami). Again not so cheap – western stuff with western prices. Third, and last mall, was near our place and we found some red wine at a wine shop and tried a shot of lemongrass flavored Thai rum, that was unique and tasty. We also bought a crispy pork on rice takeaway 60 Baht ($1.66). Now we head back to our place. We stopped at the 7/11 and bought ice and also bought more chicken from the same vendor in the parking lot there. We bought some white meat that he just pulled off his grill. Looked so good. Also bought a salad he had. He charged 50 Baht ($1.38) for the chicken 10 Baht (28 cents) for the salad.

Back at our place we ate the (now not so) crispy pork and chicken. Pork was okay (but will do better), chicken was great, and the salad was a bust. We thought the salad to be mango salad, nope, nada. Neither of us liked it, and for 28 cents we did not eat it. The wine was good and ended up having some baguette with hummus also. Then watched some You tube, did some blogging, and bed by 2230.
