Bangkok- Foodie Fun #13
July 24,
We did not do much yesterday – a kind of “chill-out” day. We of course started with our coffee and hot chocolate. Then we had the “sour” sausage with dinner type rolls, and a yogurt each for breakfast. The sausage was good, but we did not notice sourness in the taste.
Next we were able to connect with Jeff's sister and her husband. Our B-I-L has fond memories of Thailand as he taught English here for a year in the mid 1980's. It is great to see his expressions as something we say brings back one of those memories!
Then we watched some You tube and had lunch- you guessed it – the other sausage. It was supposed to be spicy and it was, being just over medium spicy for us. It was a good heat and the dinner rolls helped to tame it.
Some time after, started to go for a swim but it was raining, so just chilled the afternoon into evening. Then Jeff went to the 7-eleven for noodles for dinner. He brought back some cooked packaged corn-on-the-cob and Ramen noodles. So we cut the corn off the cob and mixed it with cabbage & a chili (from the sausages) and onion to boiling water and added the noodles and the seasoning packet. It was a great soup! Finished we listened to some music and then to bed by 2200.
Today, we had somewhere to go, we had an agenda for supper. So we started with yogurt, cookies, and coffee/hot chocolate. I told Jeff I would need more coffee in one more day or maybe two. He found a coffee bean roaster on our way to our dinner destination. Yeah!!
After breakfast we went for a swim. We tried out our new swim caps we had ordered when we first arrived here and finally got. They actually worked well and will help keep our heads from getting sunburnt! I'm sure I don't rock mine as well as those two cute little girls did!! 🤣 Anyway, we went back to our apartment and had a very light lunch – splitting an apple, and some salami and ritz crackers. We noticed the way into our place is finally blocked as they have torn up the pavement to replace the drainage in Moniiq's side of the road. There is just a bit wider than a scooter width that remains open. Interesting… this is the only entrance/exit of the whole apartment complex. Questions?!!
Around 1430 we head out. First we went to the coffee roasters, Phil Coffee Co., and bought me some coffee. It is a medium, dark roast Thai coffee, that smelled great. I am looking forward to trying. Fresh ground coffee in hand, we set off for our main destination- dinner. We are going to Best Beef. First a disclaimer it is a Buffet. But it has done well and has expanded to five branches here in Bangkok. It is a “hotpot”- in this case, meaning, a hot round grill brought to the table and you cook your own food that you select from a large 'placemat-sized' menu.
Once you make your selections, you are given three types of sauces each in little bowls: the first is a SPICY green sauce; next is a teriyaki-type sauce; and last is a savory fish-type sauce. Also you are given butter squares for your hotpot grill. Then comes the plates of what you ordered. You just fill out a premade slip of paper that has all the items listed and you just mark the quantity that you want. Then presto! It appears and you cook it up! We had little tray-like plates of super thin sliced meats of: Austalian Wagyu, Aus. Brisket, Ribeye, Pork Loin, Pork Belly, Bacon, and Thai Marinated Pork & Marinated Duck. The veg.: White Onion X3, Thai Basil X2, and three kinds of Mushrooms (Black, Eringii, and Enokitake). And lastly a small bowl of garlic fried rice. I also had a raspberry popsicle.
It was great to cook your own food at your own pace and mix and match. We had a blast! Jeff had Chang Beer and I had iced sweet tea. We just sat and ate our fill they brought us two rounds of food per our request. Easy peasy!! Our Buffet dinner was 804 Baht ($22.24). Jeff gave a tip and rounded it up to 900 Baht ($24.89), as he was super impressed with the unobtrusive, but attentiveness of our waiter. That was a great experience and loads of fun.
After dinner we went to a Lotus to get breakfast stuff for tomorrow, and we left going through the night street market again, but we are earlier tonight and it is not completely revved up yet. It is starting to be busy already though at 1730. We walked back to our apartment and had to get out the umbrella for a fine rain. Back at our place we unloaded and relaxed. Another good foodie venture! We love Thailand!
