Living our dream,

Bangkok- Foodie Fun #14

—July 25,

This morning we were up and had our coffee/hot chocolate. By 0930 we were ready and went out for brunch. We caught the Moniiq's tram to the BTS- Sky train. Today we are going to a Roaming Cook recommendation. It is called Crispy Pork Alley! I'm not kidding! The Roaming Cook called it this and Google translates the placard in the restaurant as this also. Anyway, we had to link the sky train to a bus and then walk a bit. We arrived by 1030.

We saw the place where the “wok master” prepared the food. WOW! We preceded to sit in the little chairs, but a staff member escorted us to the sit down inside cafe. (We actually did not know there was a cafe front.) Then the lady that sat us came back to take our order. I pointed to the pictures on the wall. We ordered “Mhuen Li”- which is crispy pork in a stir fry of egg, glass-type noodles, and holy basil with an awesome sauce; and “Mhoo Krob Kra Pao”- which is crispy pork and holy basil with another great sauce. We each had a small rice accompaniment. We had our own water, but also got a small bottle from them. Both dishes were so good! The pork was so crispy – it crunched when you bit into it, but it was not dry. The cut of the meat is the belly, so it very much reminded us of crispy, thick-cut, uncured bacon, as far as taste went.

We left so full and knew we had consumed quite a few calories! We were able to catch a bus that took us all the way to our local BTS stop. It was a long hour ride due to traffic and a bottle-neck 'T' intersection. We walked to the bakery close to us for some dinner rolls for supper… as if we needed any.

Back at our apartment we picked up the broom and dustpan our host had left for us. There is a battery powered broom-sweeper but the battery had run down and the plug it has, has been broken. So… now we have a regular broom which is fine and it is purple! Anyway, we cooled off and relaxed. It rained much of the afternoon – no swimming. Finally had supper around 1700 – the dinner rolls with hummus and blue cheese. The we watched two “bootleg” movies from You Tube with some popcorn. Bed around 2300.

—-July 26,

Today, we woke up, having coffee/hot chocolate with toasted rolls (left over from last night) with peanut butter. when we finished we went for a swim, because it was not raining now. Mornings seem to be less likely for rain. We had to pool to ourselves, which is the norm. I would not mind seeing those cute little girls again though!

Anyway, back to our place and changed. We caught the 1200 tram to the BTS. The Sky train gets us fairly close to our destination today. We are going with another You tube channel recommendation today. The channel is OTR – which goes into the history of food, with a lot relating to Thailand influences. (The main guy is based out of Thailand.)  The place is a Lebanese-Moroccan (Mediterranean) restaurant, called Hafid Restaurant and Cafe.

We arrived at 1230 and a young, very nice Thai waitress took our order. We had Moussaka (more like a deconstructed moussaka) which was an eggplant-potato tossed with meat sauce, tomatoes and topped with chilli pepper rings and all skirted around edge of the plate with melted cheese; Mixed Grill- which was three skewers: a ground lamb and a ground chicken, and grilled chicken pieces (no bones, usually chicken is not deboned in Thailand); and Feta Cheese Salad. We also had water and a watermelon juice. It was all great and we were served a spicy dipping sauce for the grilled meat. We enjoyed the meal, a bit of a change up. But we are in Bangkok, and ALL cuisines are available here.

Finished we went back via the Sky train. But at our stop we deviated and got our 2nd Thai Massage. We went for the 90 minute one. This is the body and head. (Last time was just the body.) WOW! These “massages” are incredible. They are more than massages. There is stretching, contorting and being walked on! The masseuse gets a full body work out, that is for sure. Anyway, our time was up at 1530 and they went for the full 90 minutes this time. (Last time are massages were about 10 minutes short of an hour.) We changed out of the clothes they provided back into our and then we are given a cup of warm tea! My feet were still tingling as we left. They charged 400 Baht each (which is $11.11). But Jeff tipped so ended up being 550 Baht each ($15.27). We decided we will come back mid next week, so we can get in another the week after that – two more sessions before we leave Thailand.

Now back at our place we relaxed and then had supper of small bowl of rice with a bit of chicken, and Caesar salad. Then I blogged and Jeff researched. Plan on bed around 2200. Tomorrow… Adventure awaits!
