Bangkok- Foodie Fun #5
July 15,
Awoke and I was able to start drinking my coffee – Jeff his chocolate milk (not the Hershey's and milk but the brown milk on the shelf that comes, you know, from brown cows – just kidding!!🤣😂) Then I called my sister, and we talked with her awhile. Then we had a light-ish breakfast. We were planning on getting hamburgers, but we watched one of our You tube channels and changed our minds. We then chatted with Jeff's sister who was visiting her adult children and DIL, and we got to say hi to them. That was a bonus!🥰. So all caught up we went out.
Our Plan… well, it was a two hour journey – via BTS (Sky Train); MRT (metro); and a bus – to our lunch destination. This was okay because it made us hungry. We arrived,… Ama Legendary Crispy Noodles! No one else was there and we were welcomed, given a menu – without any English, but had pictures and we knew what we wanted from the video. So we pointed at the pictures to rely what we wanted, and they were able to understand and process the order. So now, they – a middle aged lady, maybe Ama(?), and a twenty-ish man, maybe her son(?) – set about making our food. I wanted to ask them questions: Are you Ama? Is this your son? But I wanted some food more than disturbing them and the information. I did ask if photos were okay? given the nod, I snapped a few without being obtrusive, I hope. They seem to be okay with this as their work stations/kitchens are right out in the open. This is definitely a bonus and great fun to observe for me! So I snapped some pics. Fantastic!! But then… we got our food! Oh MY! It was probably some of the best so far! How do I describe it?
Well, first off, what we had: Rad Na, which is wide rice noodles (But these are pan-fried, wide rice Noodles – hence “Crispy”) X2, with one covered in egg; pan fried barramundi fish; and sauteed-fired beef! Now the cooking process. The wide rice noodles are set in a pan just big enough to hold them and then ladled in oil. Once the noodles are golden colored the oil is drained/scooped off the “cake” of noodles. Then the now whole mass is flipped. It was art just watching. More oil is added to get the desired crispiness. Voila! A crispy Rad Na – One crispy noodle cake! “Ama” was working on this as “her son” was doing the gravy to set the fish and beef in. Then Ama set about on the flank steak- high heat in a Wok with oil and nearly constant stirring, occasionally added flame to the wok from the burner to crisp the beef. Then, like that, first dish of the Rad Na (crispy) served with the flank steak beef in a black peppery, mushrooms X2, egg-ribboned gravy was served!! (“The son” had worked on this while I was spell-bound with Ama and her magic). (I totally missed the fish being done.)
Now, we ate and were overcome with the earthy, peppery, crispy, richness of these dishes.🎆 It was a pleasure to our senses, tastebuds, whatever you want to say,\! Jeff and I say thank you to our great God, who allows us to have the sense of taste!! We ate almost all of the meal – all that was left was some of the gravy/sauce. What a privilege that was!
After we left we did the reverse route home, (bus, metro, sky train). We did see the BIG sitting Buddha that dominates some of the skyline in Bangkok (coming and going on the metro). I snapped a couple of pics. We arrived back at our area around 1630, just as we had a light spitting of rain. We stopped at the close by 7-eleven for water.
Back at our place, we relaxed and cooled off. Around 1800, we had some popcorn and Thai rum for dinner. Thanks be for blessings!!
