Florianopolis, Brazil #36

September 4,
We woke up and readied for the day around 0730. As we had our Javas – we decided on French toast topped with apricot jam, PB or Nutella and with yogurt as a side. It had been a while and hit the spot. We caught up on some YouTube and then just rested…as I have been reminded the doctor had instructed me to do. Hmph! It was pretty windy outside and clouds built up throughout the morning. For lunch, we heated a can of “Feijoada” or Brazilian black bean stew that we bought yesterday. It was really tasty. The smell reminded me of pork & beans, but the taste was more savory – like a ham & bean soup. It did not have ham but sliced sausages. We accompanied it with a Chilean CabSav. The day was cold and the stew was hot, like the satisfaction of a bowl of chili in the winter! Supper was some Greek salad, and peanuts with toasted sliced/chunked garlic. We have been making our own Salad dressings due to bought ones usually being too large, anyway I have been getting pretty good at making an Italian dressing version. I also had a scrambled egg. We also had an after dinner adult beverage: me a coffee liqueur and Jeff some rum. That was the day, and we actually had to sleep with a heater through the night.
September 5,
The weather was very cool, crisp and much of the day was slated for rain. So it seemed like another stay at home day. We readied and had our Javas. Breakfast was Muesli with yogurt. We found a different kind of Muesli, which was less sweet and better. But something we have noticed is the big pieces of nuts that have been in them. This one has cashews not the Brazil nuts. Around 1230, we went out to a grocery store. It drizzled on us getting there. This store had ready made pizza crusts. So we bought one and some other bits and bobs. We went back to our place and made a pizza for lunch. We used cream cheese with garlic sauce we had for the base sauce, topped with sausage, onion, red pepper, and more garlic. Then lastly used some Minas Gerais cheese grated, and packaged parmesan sprinkles with some herbs. It turned out lovely. We had the pizza with a good Brazilian CabSav. It drizzled lightly off and on for the rest of the day. For supper we had popcorn with a Moroccan spice blend.
September 6 – Communication Day,
We awoke, so thankful for the heater. Today’s high was only supposed to be 59°. Brrr!! We readied and had our Javas as we did a WhatsApp video with my mother and her husband. They were trying to stay cool as we were trying to stay warm, but they were good. When we finished we made breakfast of bacon, a fried egg, and toast. We enjoyed it as it has been awhile since having that combo.
At noon we linked up with our church back home on Zoom and watched the service. When we finished we went out for lunch to Pit Smokehouse Floripa – the restaurant, not the one in the mall food court. We ordered the Bandeja de Costela (Ribs Tray), which included two Black Beef Ribs, Smoked Sausage, French Fries, Potato Salad, Sweet-butter Pickles, and Bacon Farofa (cornmeal with bacon). Jeff had a small beer and I had a mixed drink of “Jack Fire and Gingerale”. The meal was super excellent, with the meat smoked quite well, just like “True American BBQ” – their slogan. The restaurant was packed even though it was open to the elements…in other words cold. A young man entertained us all with “rock, folk, country, blues” singing/guitar performance. The place was decorated with normal stuff you’d find in any American BBQ joint, making us feel right at home. We finished and paid 358.70 BRL or $69.97 (32 BRL, or $6.24 was a cover charge for that young entertainer). We left and went to the grocery store, then back to our place to warm up! Jeff took a siesta and I blogged. My sister was busy – will catch up next week.
Lastly we connected with Jeff’s sister…… Simply living some days, somewhere else.
