El Chalten, Argentina #40
March 30,
I could not fall asleep until 0200, and it was still raining then. I awoke for good around 0830. It was pretty cold around 39 degrees, that’s F not C!😂 There was still an off and on light misting/spitting going on. We got around. I showered first. Jeff had to wait 35 minutes once I finished. Because it’s a tiny home, it has a tiny hot water heater, I guess. This is another reason not to have a tiny home! So far the cons outweigh the pros…just saying. We had our Javas and breakfast of toast (from our toaster oven, that worked well. It takes longer to do, but they were all ready together.) Then I blogged and Jeff was figuring out what we could do.
About 1130, we set out. The sun did shine – albeit, briefly. But to call it, it was another rainy day. We decided to go on the gravel road out of town called, RP 41, to Reserva Provincial Lago del Desierto (Dessert Lake Provincial Reserve). There were many hikers, hiking in the road as there wasn’t a path. The road was very washboard and full of potholes! So Jeff was seeking the least pothole route, swerving around big areas of standing water, and hikers. It was a bit frustrating and discouraging, plus the rain was never-ending. A little way down the road we saw Charrillo del Salto, which translates as “Waterfall Stream” or “Cascade of the Jump”.
We got out and followed the trail with many others to the waterfall. Oh my! It was full power and so gorgeous. The fall of water cascades down 20 m (65.6 feet). We later found out the waterfall is at full power due to the quantity of rain of late. Normally this time of year it is lower water. So one good thing all this rain has brought! The waterfall area was enhanced due to the fall foliage of the trees. We took some photos, selfies and someone offered to take our pic – that is always nice. After we finished, we went back to our car and attempted to go further on the gravel road to get to a large lake. We got some further, but came to a “lake” puddle that was across the whole road. We did not want to cross this in the Fiat rental car! We started back to the town and picked up a girl from Mexico. She only had on a windbreaker in this cold drizzle! She wanted out at the edge of town at the trailhead for the Fitz Roy trail.
Once in town, we went to Estepa Resto & Bar for lunch. When we arrived, we were the first customers of the day. We had a ham and red pepper pizza. We were given a starter of bread and a great salsa! The pizza was good and very filling, but we could only eat half of it, so we got the rest for takeaway. The bill was 42,000 ARS, or $30.32. We stopped at a local grocery store, then went back to our place. It continued to spit rain through the evening. We had another piece of pizza for dinner and then called it a day.
