Kuba, Bali #21

October 3,
We were up and about by 0700, and set about with our Javas. I only made 8oz. Instead of my normal 16oz. Just in case my system has a meltdown again. We went to breakfast; and both had the scrambled eggs, toast, and watermelon – which was very good today!
We spent the rest of the morning planning out stuff to do in Korea, and Jeff booked some things. Around 1340 we went out for lunch, choosing Wayan Restaurant. Sidebar: Wayan is a common name in Bali. It is commonly given to the firstborn male, so it is used a lot! Anyway, we ordered a Beef Rendang dish with rice and garnish of tomato & cucumber; and a Grilled Mahi-Mahi with sambal, mashed potatoes, and mixed veggies. Both were great, but I mostly stayed with the fish as it was less spicy. I had a “Bali Donix”- which was a serving of Hatten wine blended with pineapple. Jeff had a beer. We paid 251,000 IDR, or $15.15 for the meals. When we finished we left and stopped at the closest little convenience store for snack stuff for dinner.
As we were going up the little road to our place we decided to follow the little road up, past our place and just see where it went. It was a steady stream up and got a little smaller. We saw one wild deer. We saw many local little houses and realized most of the traffic up here was on scooters. The road puttered out and we turned around – Jeff had to do a four point turn with me directing him. We returned back to our place. The evening came and we had a snack of some cheese, chips, and chocolate.
October 4,
I could not fall asleep until after 0100 AM!!! I awoke at 0650. Jeff had awoken at 0530. Around 0700, he discovered that our flight leaving tonight had been delayed by eight hours! He spent the next 1.5 hrs changing our flights! He’d had bad feelings about the airline that had booked for us from the get go. Anyway, we had our Javas. I still only had half of my java- my system is still just a bit off. We went up to have our last breakfast here and in Bali. I had the last of our granola & yogurt, with their toast, and watermelon. Jeff had an omelet to which he added the last of our Bleu cheese, toast with PB & Nutella, and watermelon. We finished and went back to our room. We packed, checked out, and left by 1100.
We had 60 miles to go – to get to the airport. Google said it would take us 3.5 h o u r s !!!!! Well, I have talked about the road conditions, crazy driving, and size – or lack of size – that the main roads have. The only thing I’ll mention was the toll road with a very long bridge right as we were close to the airport. The toll gates are around six-seven across, nothing new. The issue was there were no signs in English describing how much for the toll and how to pay. So we came to the automatic booth and we saw no cash deposit, just a tap to pay. Jeff tried his credit card, but it did not work. He even tried the card that had been left in the car… it did not have enough balance. An attendant came over, he wasn’t helpful. A second attendant came over. He was able to speak English better, but he offered no other way out except to buy a card, or try to borrow someone else’s card. A new card for 100,000 IDR! The toll is only 14,000 IDR. Jeff told me to get out and try to borrow someone’s card. Meanwhile people are leaving behind us as we were struck there. Finally the third person I tried, took pity on me. He handed me his card, which I gave to Jeff. Jeff used it and we gave the guy 20,000 IDR for his kindness to charge his card 14,000 IDR. WOW! That was the worst toll booth experience I’ve ever had!!!!!
At 1439, we arrived at our “day stay” place, unloaded and calmed down. The trip took us 3 hours and 39 minutes (four of which were at the toll gate).
We went out for food. At the first place, Warung Sate Ni’mat Muslim, we shared Sate- X4 skewers of chicken and X4 of lamb with two teas. They were very small skewers, but very good. He cooked them right at the street over charcoal. The bill came to 34,000 IDR, or $2.05! We went to a second place, Depot Gimbo BBQ. We shared 1/4 kilo of ribs and rice. Jeff had a large Bintang beer and I had carbonated tea. This came to 156,000 IDR, or $9.42. With that we were full and walked back to our day stay place. I napped, Jeff relaxed. We readied, I blogged some, Jeff read and resorted our stuff for the flight. We checked out at 1930. By 1940, we were at a very busy gas station to top off the car. Jeff noticed our odometer reading was 978.5 km. Almost half of the amount that we drove in Thailand. It rolled to 980 once we arrived at the airport. The car rental guy met us straight up at 2000. He checked the car and told Jeff he would get the refund of 1,000,000 IDR, or $60.37. We thanked him and went into the airport. We got checked in and checked our bags by 2015. I passed through immigration, but Jeff had to go to a security person and get stamped. We had forgotten or else he would have done this to begin with. It all worked out as we were still two hours until our flight. We went into a lounge, and got snacks and water. They don’t serve alcohol here. I blogged and Jeff read.
This flight was delayed, we found when we left the lounge. We were supposed to have left 2245, but we board the plane until then. As we were sitting, an announcement said the plane was waiting for “necessary documents”. Finally, we backed up at 2323. Take off at 2335. Bye bye Bali.
